A few of SOPHIA’s Successes in 2009:

Immigration Task Force

  • Held an Immigration Forum at Carroll University to educate ourselves and the public on diverse immigration reform issues
  • Worked with state legislators to pass “In-state Tuition,” allowing otherwise qualified high school graduates (children of undocumented people) to attend state universities at in-state tuition rates
  • Participated in National rally in Washington D.C. to urge immigration reform
  • Working with Immigration Reform for America Now – a national group working for humane immigration reform
  • Participated in national ‘town hall’ to start dialog about immigration reform
  • Coordinating postcard campaign to legislators urging humane immigration reform

TIP Task Force

  • Met several times with County Executive Dan Vrakas, to discuss alternatives to incarceration.
  • Fought to maintain funding for Waukesha County’s Alcohol Treatment Court and Day Reporting Programs (no cuts were made, and 2% increase budgeted)
  • Worked to see funding for Adult Basic Education Program maintained (provides opportunities for county jail inmates to receive a GED or upgrade job skills)
  • Worked with state legislators to provide funds for treatment alternatives in counties

Workforce Housing Task Force

  • Had large presence and speakers at Waukesha City Zoning Board meeting to secure passage of zoning waiver to allow Temporary Overflow Homeless Shelter at St. Matthias Church
  • Worked to broaden state legislation to support Housing Trust Funds
  • Collaborating with Waukesha County’s Affordable Workforce Housing Task Force
  • Collaborating with agencies in Waukesha county working to address housing issues

Health Care Reform Task

Communicated with all SOPHIA members when calls to legislators needed

Held “Dialogues on Health Care Reform from a Faith Perspective “
