Immigration reform moving again

Things are moving again for immigration reform.  Click here for the text of President Obama’s speech today on immigration:

Leaders of our national religious bodies and of the immigration reform movement met with the President on Monday.  It seems there is some movement on the DREAM Act.  There are 39 cosponsors in the Senate and 124 cosponsors in the House.  Everyone expects the Senate to move first then the House.  Need to build cosponsors and looking for Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats.  Locally, Sens. Kohl and Feingold are both cosponsors of the DREAM Act Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act of 2009 (S 729).  Also, in the House, Reps. Moore and Baldwin are co-sponsors (H.R.1751 American Dream Act).  We need to support them and to work on the rest of our Wisconsin Representatives.

A Waukesha county supervisor has called for support of the Arizona anti-immigrant law.  This sentiment is likely to spread throughout all our communities.  We don’t want to give legitimacy to such a crazy idea by responding to such calls publically.  However, it would be wise for all of us to call our local reps with a message that you don’t agree with Arizona’s approach to the immigration issue and you hope they don’t either.

Have a safe and relaxing holiday!
