The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that over 150 people participated in WISDOM’s press conference yesterday.
We released our new brief, Failures in Revocation and GPS Monitoring, in front of the Milwaukee Secure Detention Center and we did a good job of educating about the serious problems, and the ways they hurt real people – many of whom were with us yesterday.
Then we marched to Governor Walker’s Milwaukee office and left him a letter:
“… a study by the Council of State Governments showed that about 4,000 of the people who enter our prisons each year do so because of technical violations of their probation or parole. That is, they are not sent back to prison because they have committed a crime, but because they have violated a rule of probation. If those 4,000 people serve just one year back in prison, the cost to the taxpayers is about $140 million per year…”
We reminded the Governor that “The Department of Corrections is out of control. The budget is out of control, and the rate of incarceration is out of control. Much of this is the direct result of decisions made, or not made, by your office”.
Our next Reform Now brief will be on the injustices related to solitary confinement. That event will be in Madison. Watch our website and Facebook page for ways you can help with this campaign to reform Wisconsin’s criminal justice system.
