Prisoner Abuse in Waupun

posted Jul 25, 2014, 12:12 PM by Sophia Webmaster

You may have seen the 3-part series on abuses in segregation in the Waupun prison in your local newspaper. You may also want to read the articles online at Wisconsin Watch, because there is a lot more to the articles than appears in the printed media.

Here are steps you can take to address the problem:
~ Contact your state legislators. Your message doesn’t have to be long or comprehensive. Let them know you’re paying attention and that this situation offends your religious values.

~ Send a letter to the editor of your local paper.

Talking points, thanks to Peg Swan:
~ All segregation units are abuse, even if rules are followed
~ DOC’s health staff know how to treat the mentally ill but have no support or funding
~ Mental Health units should be installed in all facilities as they were installed in Taychedah as the result of a lawsuit
~ Guards should be rotated from segregation to general population every three months
~ Guards need extensive training to deal with difficult prisoners
~ Staff need a mechanism to complain about other staff safely
~ Inmates need an independent complaint system
