state budget for transportation is shrinking, raising concerns for
public transportation in the future. The dominant focus of the
legislature is on roads and freeways.
Transit service that connects workers to jobs has been reduced 22%

Since the beginning of our task force, we have spent time educating ourselves on transit issues. We continue to build relationships in the community through outreach events which include social service providers, employers, legislators and policy-makers.
In addition, SOPHIA monitors legislation that affects public transportation. We attend job fairs, grassroots efforts and most recently, met and spoke with state legislators encouraging public transit be included in AB210.
Presently, this SOPHIA Task Force is focusing on collecting stories of those who use the transit system and of those who cannot make connections with busing. We welcome you to share your story with us by clicking on this link: www.sophiawaukesha.org
The stories collected will be published and used to document the need for additional transit funding to support a broader transportation system.
AB210 was a bill that would allow counties to hold a referendum to decide if they want to raise local sales tax by .5% to provide money in the county for general road repair. The bill did NOT include language that would permit funds to be used for public transportation.
AB210 is now dead. SOPHIA can claim a part in this victory by the efforts we made in talking with state legislators.
